Colombo, the main post office of the western province was assigned the index letter (A) in 1868.
Galle, the head office of the southern province was assigned the index letter (B) from 1868.
Kandy, the head office of the Central Province was assigned the index letter (C) from 1868.
Jaffna, the head office of the northern province was assigned the index letter (D) from 1868.
Kurnegalle, the head office of the north western province was assigned the index letter (E) from 1868.
Batticaloa became the head office of the eastern province in 1870. The literal obliterator (F) was reassigned to Batticaloa after that.
The obliterator (F) was initially assigned to Trincomalee in 1868 when it was the head ofiice of the eastern province.
