Prepaid entire to London with CEYLON/PACKET LETTER – 17 OC 17/ 1818 (SL1) and COLOMBO (PS1, LRD)/ POST PAID (PD2, LRD). Manuscript “7/paid” indicating prepayment for double rate. PAID/ 31 Mar 31/ 1819 arr and “INDIA/PACKET LETTER/ PAID TO/ LONDON” h/s.

Trincomale Post Paid to India, 1818
Folded letter dated Trincomale, March 31st with TRINCOMALE(PS2)/ POST PAID(PD2) dispatch to Madras with “G.P.O./AP 9/ 1818” arrival d/s. “21 fs” manuscript marking indicating prepayment of postage. Letter was written by Joseph Skinner, a British naval officer stationed in Trincomalee to Thomas Fiott De Havilland, Major of the Madras Engineers. The lettter offered condolences on the death of his wife Elizabeth de SausMarez who had died on 14th March 1818. The entire also enclosed an additional letter dated “Ship London at Sea, March 15th” written by Skinner on the voyage from London to Ceylon.
